Wikipedia says “Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a website or a web page in search engines via the “natural” or un-paid (“organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine.”

 

Search engine optimisation will drive more traffic to your website through natural results. Search engine marketing will drive traffic to your website through paid search campaigns, where you pay to get your website listed as part of the sponsored search listings. If you have an online shopping cart, this should equate to more sales. If you collect prospect information, it should equate to more leads. More sales or leads can only be a good thing for your business.

 

Organic or natural search engine optimisation will firstly entail modifying your website so that it has maximum visibility to search engines. There are other strategies such as increasing the number of inbound links that will improve the quality and quantity of traffic coming to your website.
